John Mead Ray to Inhabitants of Coggeshall, Halstead, and Bocking in Essex 19 June 1794
Sudbury, June 19, 1794
The Bearer of this / Mr. Gustavus Vassa / is a native of Africa was carried into slavery at an early period of Life has passed Through scenes most distressing and interesting is truly intelligent was recommended to me by my friend Mr. Buck of Bury who has long known him as a person of great moral worth and in this judgment of charity as a genuine disciple of our common Lord.–
The object of his journey is the disposal of a Book which contains the narrative of his life. I shall consider it as a favour if you will give him such assistance as you think proper in promoting the sale of his publication in doing which you will at the same time render very as capable assistance to a worthy man where sufferings and services (in my judgment) give him some claim on the patronage of the community.–
I am with sincere regard.
Your ob.t. Servt.
